Ponferrada is a small city in the autonomous community of Castile, and it is also one of the main stages of the Way of St. James in the province of Leon. The historic center of this city stretches at the foot of a grand castle founded by the Templars many centuries ago. Ponferrada is a little off the beaten path, so it's not very popular, but it's often visited by guests from other regions of Spain by taking bus on the Madrid-Ponferrada bus or the Salamanca-Ponferrada bus. Here you can feel the very special Spanish atmosphere for which many people travel to this hot country. Ponferrada is a real Spanish hinterland, here you will find picturesque surroundings without unnecessary signs of civilization and a colorful medieval fortress that will perfectly fit into any movie based on medieval history. The city is located in the zone of influence of the mountain climate, the temperature here is +12⁰, and in summer +27⁰, most tourists rest here from June to September.

The first mention of Ponferrada is associated with the ancient Roman citadel. Since the XI century, a stream of pilgrims has been stretching to Santiago de Compostela, and thanks to this, the city of Ponce Ferrat appeared here. The city flourished in the days of the ancient Romans, who found gold ore in its vicinity. By the way, the place where the precious metal was mined can still be seen today - it is located 30 km from the city and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Christian legends say that the Apostle James passed through this area during his travels. If you are fond of religious buildings, be sure to buy a bus ticket to Ponferrada.

At the foot of the castle lies the old part of the city, which can be accessed via Reloch Street. The street owes its name to the Clock Tower, built in the 16th century, during the reign of Charles I, above one of the gates of the ancient fortress wall. The Madres Concepcionistas Monastery is located next to the tower. The construction of this two-story building of raw stone was started by Francisco Samper in 1565. The end of the street leads to the Plaza de la Encina, a traditional trading area. On it stands the Basilica de la Encina, one of the most prominent religious buildings in the city. Inside, in addition to the carved figure of the Blessed Virgin of Encina, you can see several retablos, among which the main altar created by Mateo Flores in the 17th century stands out. In the lower part of the old town is the Hospital Hospital de la Reina, where the Templar image of Christ is kept.

It is also worth visiting the Museo Bierzo, located in a former prison building. Here you can find a variety of household items, tools and works of art, which will help you to get acquainted with the historical heritage of Ponferrada and the entire region. Another architectural gem has been preserved on the outskirts of Ponferrada. This is the Church of Santo Tomas de las Olas, a Mosaic church built in the tenth century.
