Is It Safe to Travel to Spain Right Now? The Latest Update

Spain is experiencing severe weather events, raising concerns among tourists with upcoming trips. Is it still safe to travel to Spain, or is it time to cancel? Here’s what INFOBUS knows about the situation in Spain — check out the latest updates.
Earthquake and flooding in Spain
The past week has been challenging for Spain — the country faced a severe storm on the weekend, causing floods, downpours, and strong winds. Warnings were issued by AEMET (Spanish weather agency) on Saturday, July 12.
On Monday, July 14, the 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Spain at 7:13 a.m., with tremors felt across several provinces.
Following the flooding, two people were reported missing, and a hospital was evacuated in Barcelona. While the earthquake caused damage to property and buildings, no fatalities have been reported.
Where did the flooding and earthquake happen?
After torrential rains started, AEMET issued warnings across Zaragoza, Castellón, Navarra, Teruel, Huesca, and the Catalonian cities of Tarragona, Girona, Lleida, and Barcelona. One of the most popular tourist destinations, Barcelona, was affected by 155mm of rain.
The earthquake struck on the Almería coast in southern Spain, causing tremors in areas including Murcia, Alicante, Jaén, Albacete, Granada, Málaga, and the Costa del Sol.
Is it safe to travel to Spain right now?
Torrential rains have eased, and the earthquake damage didn’t cause widespread destruction. But the events are serious — affected areas are still undergoing the consequences of recent disasters.
It’s a common question among travelers: “Is it safe to travel to Spain right now?” There are no international warnings or restrictions from the Spanish government indicating that it’s not safe to visit the country. INFOBUS recommends staying alert and checking the weather conditions at the planned destination. Check weather warnings on the official AEMET website.
