Prague in Summer: Best Places to Visit and Things to Do

Every summer, tourists begin planning their trips and looking for beautiful summer destinations. INFOBUS recommends checking out Prague for your summer vacation. It offers a wide variety of attractions and activities, and we’ve prepared this guide to help you explore this lovely city. Let’s take a closer look at the best places to visit in Prague and discover the top things to do in Prague this summer.

Is Prague Worth Visiting in Summer?

Everyone wants to make sure their trip is worth the time and money. And we’re here to explain why Prague is a perfect summer vacation destination and how to get the most out of it.

The city is the capital of the Czech Republic and is renowned for its ancient roots, cultural significance, and unique atmosphere. Prague offers many great ways to spend your vacation joyfully, including:

  ? historic landmarks,

  ? cultural sites,

  ? delicious Czech cuisine,

  ? various festivals.

The weather in Prague in summer is mild and comfortable for walking tours and other outdoor activities. The temperature is around 22–30°C (71–86°F), so it’s convenient for most people. If you are looking for heat waves, consider visiting Prague in July or August, when the weather tends to be warmer.

Prague is also a very welcoming city. People are warm, friendly, and happy to help visitors. Enjoy scenic views of the city and make sure to visit some of the must-see attractions — those are popular worldwide. Let’s learn more about the best places to visit in Prague.

Best Places to Visit in Prague

Prague fascinates visitors with plenty of beautiful and important places. The city offers a variety of attractions, from modern architecture to medieval buildings. Tourists come to enjoy historic sites, walk around squares and parks, and explore the cultural diversity of Prague.

Firstly, we recommend visiting the Prague Old Town. This medieval part of the city hides many gems and wonderful places worth visiting. You should definitely take a walking tour around the Old Town to admire the charming cobbled streets that are steeped in history. The Old Town itself leads to many other attractions.

Consider visiting the Old Town Square, founded in the 12th century. Medieval Gothic architecture combines with Baroque style and hypnotizes visitors with unique decorations and sophisticated ornaments. The Old Town Square is home to many cultural sites, including:

? Old Town Hall: a Gothic tower, established in 1338, has been rebuilt and reconstructed several times since then. It combines different styles as the Hall contains several buildings from different periods. The tower itself is one of the greatest observation decks in Prague, and visitors come to admire panoramic views of the city.

? Prague Astronomical Clock: Located on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall, the Prague Astronomical Clock is one of the most unique things to see in the city. It has an astronomical dial to follow the positions of the Sun and Moon, a rotating calendar dial that displays the current zodiac sign, and a unique feature with the Twelve Apostles appearing every hour.

? Church of Our Lady before Týn: a fascinating church in Gothic style built in the 14th–16th centuries with a redesigned Baroque interior. It exhibits many artworks and paintings from different periods, and has the oldest organ in Prague, dating back to 1673.

? Jan Hus Memorial: an important memorial in Prague dedicated to the philosopher, religious thinker, and one of the founders of the Protestant movement, Jan Hus. The memorial was completed in 1915.

Among other Prague summer attractions, we suggest going to a Prague landmark, the Charles Bridge. The bridge connects two parts of the city — Old Town and Lesser Town (Malá Strana). It offers unforgettable views and is also known as one of the best observation decks in Prague. There are many street artists and photographers entertaining visitors and creating lasting memories.

The Prague Castle is just near the Charles Bridge. Prague Castle, another iconic symbol of the city, is renowned for its ancient history and ethereal beauty. It’s a complex of several buildings, each worth your attention and time to explore. The castle’s history dates back to 870, when the Church of the Virgin Mary was built. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest castle complex in the world, covering around 70,000 square meters (17.2 acres). The complex contains many significant places, including:

  ? Old Royal Palace,

  ? Saint George’s Basilica,

  ? Royal Garden,

  ? Ball Games Hall,

  ? Queen Anne’s Summer Palace.

One of the main churches of the Prague Castle is the St. Vitus Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saints Vitus, Wenceslaus, and Adalbert. Part of the Prague Castle complex, the cathedral is the largest and most important church in the country, completed in authentic Gothic style. The main tower of the cathedral is 102.8 m (337 ft) high. One of the most outstanding things about this place is the Chapel of St. Wenceslaus, containing various artifacts and relics. The cathedral is also beautiful for its decorations and interior.

To explore modern Prague, be sure to visit the Dancing House. This prominent modern building is renowned for its eye-catching and unique architecture. It houses a hotel, a gallery, and a public restaurant on the top of the building.

So if you ask: “Where to go in Prague in summer?”, there are plenty of options for sightseeing. We’ve mentioned only a few places, but there are more to explore: Petrin Tower, the New National Museum, the Strahov Monastery, the Lennon Wall, the Vyšehrad, and the Žižkov Television Tower.

What to Do in Prague in Summer?

Besides some attractions and cultural sites, summer in Prague is full of vibrant events, festivals, and seasonal activities offering unique experiences, from scenic cruises to thrilling skydives. If you are looking for the best summer activities in Prague, consider:

? A boat cruise: Several options are available for different occasions. You can take a dinner cruise, a boat party, a canal cruise, or a Vltava River sightseeing cruise.

? A bike city tour: A bike or e-bike tour is a great option for sustainable travel. Ride around the city and enjoy popular sights with a guided tour or just on your own.

? Skydiving: jump from 4,200 meters (14,000 feet), free-fall, and take in breathtaking views. Truly an unforgettable and unique experience.

There are also plenty of outdoor things to do in Prague. If you like nature and walking, take a tour of the Prague gardens. Enjoy the lush greenery and blooms in the Wallenstein Gardens, the Vrtba Garden, the Franciscan Gardens, and the Prague Castle Gardens.

Prague also hosts many open-air cinemas, so it might be a cozy way to watch movies, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city, and gaze at the stars under a warm blanket.

If you are looking for summer events in Prague, check out the Summer Shakespeare Festival. It takes place from the end of June to September. It’s the biggest open-air festival dedicated to Shakespeare’s works — a perfect way to enjoy an open-air theater.

Also, don’t forget to check out the Bohemia Jazz Fest. It takes place in Prague in July, and it’s a perfect match for jazz lovers. On the other hand, if you prefer rock music, don’t miss out on the Rock for the People festival featuring famous rock performers.

In addition to these, Prague hosts many more events in the summer: a Classic Car Exhibition, a world skateboarding competition, Ladronka Fest,  and the Prague Folklore Days festival.
